October 2, 1944 – January 8, 2024
Anne (Demarest) Taft passed away on January 8, 2024 while remaining young at heart at the age of 79. She was born in New York to the late Harold and Eleanor (Conklin) Demarest and grew up in Summit, New Jersey. She graduated from Summit High School and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Earlham College. Anne spent most of her adult life in the community of Binghamton, New York, where she was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation of Binghamton. She was employed as a programmer at the IBM Glendale Labs for many years.
Anne was a long-time supporter of and volunteer at PBS member station WSKG in Binghamton, New York. She served as President and newsletter editor of Mensa of the Southern Tier of New York and held multiple leadership roles in the League of Women Voters of Broome and Tioga Counties, and in the American Association of University Women. She also was chapter president of the National Organization for Women (NOW). Anne personally funded a scholarship to support women majoring in mathematics or physical science at Earlham College. She was also an advocate for the Community Foundation of South-Central New York, Planned Parenthood, Family Planning of South-Central New York. She also was the treasurer of the Franklin Conklin Foundation for 20 years.
Anne enjoyed holiday meals with her Taft relatives in Binghamton, and visits from her brothers and their children, Joan and David. Throughout her life she also provided a loving home to numerous pets. Anne will be most remembered by many for remaining caring and truly kind throughout her life while overcoming challenges using her diverse abilities, resources, and high intelligence (including the rare combination of being highly skilled in mathematics and science and multiple art mediums) to truly make the world a better place.
Anne is survived by her brothers, Harry and Frank Demarest; her stepchildren: James, Renee, and Connie Taft and numerous nieces and nephews of many generations. In addition to her parents, Anne was predeceased by her husband, James M. Taft.
A Celebration of Anne's Life will be held in Binghamton at a later date.
