Obituary

Charles Russell Sweaney, 90, husband of Mrs. Judith L. (King) Sweaney of Clermont, Florida, passed away on August 4, 2025, following an extended illness.

Born in Chanute, Kansas, on October 18, 1934, to the late Harold A. and Margaret A. (Just) Sweaney, Russ spent his early years in Kansas before the family moved to San Diego, California. By the time he returned home from the service the first time, the family had moved to Ontario, California. Russ joined the Air Force in October 1951, serving until November 1955, and reenlisting in January 1956 for six more years. During his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, and dedicated 10 years, 4 months, and 13 days to serving his country while also pursuing his education. After leaving the Air Force in 1962, Russ settled in Montclair, California and began his career at General Dynamics, Pomona Division in California, working as an electronics engineer, designing computer guidance systems for aircraft and missiles. He remained there for 35 years until retiring on August 21, 1992. Even in retirement, Russ's energy and curiosity never slowed. In 1983, he had started "Computer Solutions," where he sold personal computers, wrote custom software, and consulted for several large companies. Known for keeping his customers happy, he continued running the business until 1995, when he and Judy moved to St. Louis, Missouri, for 13 years before leaving the snow and ice behind to finally settle in Florida.

Russ was a learned man and could contribute astutely to any conversation. But a single raised brow or a quiet chuckle from him often said it all. One might refer to Russ as a "renaissance man" – his capabilities, hobbies and interests reflected the well-rounded individual he truly was. He loved the focus and challenge of trapshooting, the strategy and patience of a wellplayed chess match, and he found great joy in a wide range of music, especially classical, which oƯered him both inspiration and peace. Together, these pursuits reflected the qualities that defined him—discipline, attentiveness, and an enduring appreciation for life's quieter rewards.

He is survived by his widow and children: their daughter Sarah Sweaney of Oklahoma; Russ's two daughters, Theresa Sweaney of Alaska and Tonya Sweaney-Wilde of Utah; Judy's two daughters, Laura Toomey-Smith of Tennessee and Hope ToomeyMcCann of Florida, and son DeWayne Toomey of Florida. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren, with number nine arriving soon. He is predeceased by his son Charles S. Sweaney, daughter Karen A. SweaneyBryan, brother Michael A. Sweaney, sister Regina R. Sweaney-Potts, and grandson Charles D. Wells.

Though Russ's career and service reflected his drive and discipline, his family remembers him most for his quiet strength and the example he set. He was a constant presence who modeled his values through the years, someone who gave generously in his own understated way, often guiding or correcting with just a few words. His devotion extended beyond his own children as he lovingly embraced the responsibility of raising three stepchildren alongside four of his own. To his family, he was the man who stood by them, who made life better simply by being there, and whose steady love and guidance will be remembered with gratitude forever.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
